Quincy City Council

Quincy Ward Councillors are elected every two years in an odd election year.

Quincy is divided into 6 wards and each ward is divided into 5 precincts. Ward 5 precinct 1 is divided into precinct 1 and precinct 1 A.

The Council consists of nine members, three elected At-Large Councillors and one Councillor each from the City's six wards. 

What is the role of your Ward Councillor?

  • Representing your ward at the city council

  • Reporting back to the community through ward meetings

  • Assisting the community in identifying needs & priority areas of development

  • Flagging issues and escalating them to relevant authorities

  • Making sure concerns raised by people in the ward are represented in council meetings

  • Collaboration with other council members and the mayor to develop and pass legislation set the city’s budget, and address issues ranging from public safety to infrastructure development

What is the role of an At-Large Councillor?

An At-Large Councillor is an elected member of Quincy City Council who represents the entire city of Quincy, rather than a ward within it. The role of an At-Large Councillor typically includes:

  • Representation of the population of Quincy

  • Reporting back to the community through ward meetings

  • Assisting the community in identifying needs & priority areas of development

  • Flagging issues and escalating them to relevant authorities

  • Collaboration with Other Council Members: At-large councilors collaborate with ward councilors and the mayor to develop and pass legislation, set the city’s budget, and address issues ranging from public safety to infrastructure development

  • Balancing Citywide Concerns: They focus on citywide initiatives, long-term planning, and projects that affect the entire city of Quincy

What is the Quincy School Committee?

The Quincy School Committee consists of six members elected by the citizens of Quincy, the Mayor, who serves as the Chair of the School Committee, and the Superintendent of Schools, who serves as the Secretary of the School Committee.

What is the role of the Vice-chair?

The School Committee elects the Vice-chair who appoints the subcommittees. The term of Vice-chair is two years. The following are subcommittees appointed:

  • Facilities, Transportation & Security

  • Policy

What are the School Committee Terms?

The School Committee terms are staggered with 3 members chosen in each municipal election. Each member serves for 4 years on the School Committee.

What is the role of the School Committee?

  • Policy: Reviews and establishes policies and educational goals for the district consistent with the laws and standards set by the Massachusetts Board of Elementary & Secondary Education (DESE)

  • Make staffing decisions: Appoints, evaluates, disciplines, or terminates the Superintendent; approves staffing recommendations; sets performance standards for educators and other school district employees.

  • Communication: Develops the mission, and vision of the school district; promotes communication between community & school

  • Collective bargaining: Designates a team to negotiate employee contracts

  • Curriculum: Approves adoption and revision of curriculum & textbooks.

  • Advocacy: Advocates on behalf of schools & students.

  • Finance: Approves, reviews & oversees the school budget.
